Tomáš Sequens featured in “Trends in Sustainability” podcast
KSB partner Tomáš Sequens appeared as a recent guest on the Trends in Sustainability podcast produced by [ta] Udržitelnost in collaboration with E15.

In the interview, Tomáš spoke on the key challenges facing the Czech energy sector amid its ongoing transformation. He highlighted the risks associated with the country’s expected shift from being a net exporter to a net importer of electricity, stating that, in his view, relying heavily on electricity imports is problematic both from an energy security perspective and in terms of supply stability.
Tomáš also pointed to the importance of the “energy trilemma”, which requires balancing sustainability, security, and affordability. He noted that current debates tend to focus on sustainability, while the other two dimensions remain largely overlooked.
The discussion also covered the impact of the Lex OZE III amendment to the Energy Act, which has enabled the development and grid connection of standalone battery storage facilities. These facilities are playing an increasingly important role in modern energy systems, particularly in balancing the intermittency of renewable energy sources.
At the same time, Tomáš highlighted the persistent issue of regulatory lag, noting that legislation often follows market developments with a delay. In the case of battery storage, many projects had already been prepared but could not move forward until the legal framework was put in place.
Finally, he addressed the ongoing transition away from coal and the risk that the phase-out of existing sources may not be properly aligned with the commissioning of new capacity, including nuclear and gas-fired power plants. This imbalance, he warned, could lead to lower domestic generation capacity and higher reliance on imports.
While he considers the integration of the European electricity market a positive development, Tomáš cautioned against treating it as a substitute for maintaining sufficient domestic energy resources.
