Organized by Česká justice and Ekonomický deník at Truhlárna Karlín in Prague, the “Law and the Environment” conference brought together representatives from the government, the business sector, the professional community, and the legal profession to discuss the current challenges related to environmental protection, decarbonization, and the regulatory framework for doing business.

In his presentation, Tomáš addressed environmental permitting and the practical application of the Unified Environmental Opinion. He focused on how to structure permitting processes to ensure a high level of environmental protection while avoiding the creation of unnecessary administrative obstacles to investment and project development.

A significant portion of the discussion also addressed the decarbonization of transportation and industry. Tomáš highlighted the need for a technology-neutral approach for meeting climate goals and emphasized that the path to decarbonization should not be based solely on bans on specific technologies. The debate also addressed the issue of European environmental legislation which has recently been adopted in the form of directly binding regulations—an approach that Tomáš has long considered less than ideal, as it often conflicts with existing national laws in individual member states.

The topics discussed at the conference subsequently resonated in the media and in expert circles. Tomáš’s presentation was followed by a series of articles, commentaries, and reactions on social media, which further expanded the discussion on the future of environmental regulation, decarbonization, and the framework for modern industry and transportation.

The debate confirmed that environmental protection issues can no longer be viewed in isolation, as they are increasingly intertwined with energy policy, industrial policy, the competitiveness of the European economy, and everyday legal practice. And that is precisely why we consider it important to take an active role in expert discussions on these topics.
